Gamma exposure on Reddit: what GEX really tells you
Gamma exposure (GEX) estimates how much stock options dealers must buy or sell as the price moves. Positive GEX means their hedging leans against moves, so ranges tend to hold. Negative GEX means they hedge with the move, so trends and volatility tend to grow. It is an estimate built on assumptions, not a price target.
The questions people actually ask
Does GEX predict the close? No. It describes how dealer hedging is likely to react to a move, not which way the move goes.
What is the gamma flip? The price where estimated net GEX changes sign. Above it, hedging tends to calm the market. Below it, hedging tends to add fuel.
Why do two sites show different GEX? Each makes its own assumption about which side of each trade dealers hold, which expiries count, and how often the data refreshes. Compare levels, not exact dollar figures.
How to use it without fooling yourself
Use the large positive-gamma strikes as places a move may slow, and the negative-gamma zone as a warning that moves can run. Combine it with the chart: a level means more when price has reacted there before. Never size a trade on GEX alone.
Questions
- Is gamma exposure reliable?
- It is a useful map of dealer hedging pressure, built on assumptions about who holds which side. Use it for context, not as a signal on its own.
- Where can I see GEX for free?
- Obelion shows gamma exposure by strike, the gamma flip and call and put walls for free, with no sign-up.
- Does GEX work on single stocks?
- It is most meaningful on heavily traded index products like SPX, SPY and QQQ. On thinly traded stocks the options market is too small to move the shares much.
