0DTE options on Reddit: do they actually work?
0DTE options expire the same day, so they are cheap and move violently. Most far out-of-the-money 0DTE options expire worthless, because the market must move past the strike within hours. They can work as small, defined-risk bets with a clear plan. As a habit of buying lottery tickets they usually drain an account.
Why they move so much
On expiry day, gamma near the money is at its highest, so delta swings hard with every move. Time decay is also fastest in the last hours. The result: small moves in the stock create large percentage swings in the option, both ways.
Checking the odds
Option prices imply a chance of finishing in the money. For a contract a full expected move away, it is usually low. Check it before buying, and size the trade so losing all of it is acceptable.
