Using GEX & DEX individually

Which lens to reach for, for which question.

You do not always need both. Each metric is the better standalone tool for a different class of question.

Reach for GEX alone when…

  • You are deciding how to trade, not what: sizing, stop width, and whether to fade or follow moves all hang on the gamma regime.
  • You need intraday levels — the flip level and the call/put walls are actionable support/resistance on their own.
  • Volatility is the trade: positive gamma sells it, negative gamma buys it.

Reach for DEX alone when…

  • You are handicapping direction and crowding: which side is heavy, how one-sided the chain is, and where the squeeze risk lives.
  • You are tracking positioning over days — the trend and sign-flips of Total Net DEX are a swing-timeframe signal, where GEX is mostly a today signal.
  • An expiration is approaching and you want to know how much hedge flow rolls off, and in which direction — that is delta notional, not gamma.
Put it together
Character from GEX, crowding from DEX, and context from the GEX track — that is the full dealer-positioning read. Neither metric predicts direction; both tell you what the market is set up to do to the crowd.
