Candles without superstition
Why pattern-memorization fails, and the checklist that replaces it.
Candlestick education usually fails the same way: dozens of named patterns memorized as signals, traded anywhere they appear. Backtested that way, most patterns are a coin flip — because a candle is a description of what just happened, not a prophecy. Its value is entirely conditional on where it happens and what the market is.
The pre-trade candle checklist
- Location — is price at a level that matters (structure, prior day extreme, GEX wall)? No level, no trade.
- Context — trend, range, or transition on the context timeframe? A reversal candle against a fresh, healthy trend is a pullback entry for the other side.
- The candle — does the close actually confirm the story (rejection closes back inside; breaks close beyond)?
- Volume — did participation back the move, or is it a hollow print? See the volume track.
- Risk — the candle's extreme gives the stop; does the distance to target justify it in R? If not, pass — the next candle is always coming.
Build the eye by repetition
Replay unfamiliar sessions in the Arena and narrate each significant candle aloud — who won, who is trapped, what would confirm. A few weeks of that builds the instinct no pattern cheat-sheet ever does.
